AFP, BIRMINGHAM, England - Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is refusing to budge in the Gareth Barry transfer tug of war after warning Liverpool he will only sell the England midfielder for 18 million pounds (22.6 million euros).

O'Neill has turned down four bids of up to 15 million pounds (18.8 million euros) from Liverpool for the Villa captain and even wrote to the Anfield club to spell out his position.

AFP, BEIJING  - Beijing's environment bureau insisted on Tuesday that pollution would not be a problem for the Olympics despite heavy smog enveloping the city exactly one month before the Games start.

Visibility throughout the Chinese capital was down to a few hundred metres (yards) as pollution mixed in with misty weather, rendering the skykline a dull mix of grey and white.

New Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari insists Frank Lampard has told him he wants to remain at Stamford Bridge, reports BBC.

The United Arab Emirates is keen to host the 2010 edition the Asia Cup after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said the next tournament would be held in a non test-playing country, reports Reuters.

The UAE is hoping its sizable ethnic South Asian population and its state-of-the art facilities will win them the rights to stage the competition, contested by Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, UAE and Sri Lanka, who won this year's edition.

REUTERS, LONDON- Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo successfully underwent surgery on his right ankle in Amsterdam on Monday, the Premier League champions said on their Web site (www.manutd.com).

Ronaldo said after Portugal's Euro 2008 exit that he had been carrying an ankle injury for several months and it now appears certain he will miss the start of the new season.
