General election will be held on Dec 29

Dhaka, Nov 23 (bdnews24.com) – The general election will be held on Dec. 29 and Upazila Parishad polls on Jan. 22, the chief election commissioner announced on Sunday after a week of intense negotiations between the Election Commission, government and major parties.

"The changes have been carried out to ensure the participation of all parties in the election and we hope that these amendments will be acceptable to all," ATM Shamsul Huda said at a crowded press conference at the EC Secretariat.

Dhaka, Nov 23 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court is set to deliver verdict on Dec. 1 in a graft case against former president HM Ershad on charges of setting up digital telephone lines in 89 Upazila.

After the hearings on Sunday, Dhaka divisional special judge M Golam Motuza Majumder announced the date for the verdict 16 years after the case had been filed.

Obama tells Karzai Afghan security will be priority

KABUL, Sun Nov 23,(bdnews24.com/Reuters) - US President-elect Barack Obama told Afghan President Hamid Karzai he would make it a priority to fight terrorism and bring security to Afghanistan and the region, the Afghan presidential palace said Sunday.

Obama has pledged a new focus on Afghanistan when he becomes president in January, but while still a candidate he criticized Karzai for failing to tackle corruption, the booming drugs trade and for "not getting out of the bunker" to govern effectively.

LIMA, Nov 23,(bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Leaders from Asia and the Americas promised on Saturday to push for a global free trade deal and reform international lenders in an effort to keep the world from sliding into a deep recession.

US President George W Bush, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and other members of the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group, or APEC, said they would refrain from raising trade barriers over the next 12 months.

India complain to ICC over Lloyd remarks

NEW DELHI, Nov 22 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - The Indian board has complained to the International Cricket Council (ICC) about its cricket committee chief Clive Lloyd for suggesting talks to settle a row over the unofficial Twenty20 Indian Cricket League.

The former West Indies skipper had said the ICL and the official Indian Premier League could work together.

Children of centenarians live longer

NEW YORK, Nov 23,(bdnews24.com/Reuters Health) - People who make it to the age of 100 may indeed have some "good genes" that they pass on their children, according to a new study.

The study, of more than 600 older US adults, found that the children of centenarians tended to live longer and were substantially less likely to develop diabetes or suffer a heart attack or stroke over four years.

Regional scout camp starts tomorrow

The sixth South Asian Federation Friendship Camp, with the theme 'Scouting for Peace and Friendship', is set to start Sunday at the National Scout Training Centre in Gazipur.

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the week-long camp from Oct 12-18.
