Biman Staff Run Amok at HQ over Pay Hike

Workers and officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines have besieged the national carrier's headquarters in Kurmitola demanding a pay rise in line with the pay scale declared by the government.

The staff have also confined the carrier's managing director Zakiul Islam inside his office in the Balaka Building and vandalised his private secretary's office at one point of their demonstration that started around 11am on Tuesday

'Eid' Rail Ticket Sales Start

Advance train ticket sales started on Tuesday morning in a bid to ease the hassles of Eid-Ul-Fitr travelers, a senior railway official said.

The sale of the such tickets, popularly referred to as 'Eid' tickets, will continue until Sep 4.

Like every year, tickets can be bought five days in advance from the date of journey from the ticket booths of Kamalapur, Airport, Joydebpur and Sylhet rail stations from 9am to 5pm every day.

Obama Widens US Sanctions on North Korea

President Barack Obama broadened financial sanctions on North Korea on Monday and froze the US assets of four North Korean citizens and eight firms in part to punish it for the sinking of a South Korean warship.

Obama signed an executive order that lets the United States block the US assets of North Korean entities that trade in conventional arms or luxury products, counterfeit currency or engage in money laundering, drug smuggling or other "illicit" activity that supports the government or its leaders.

1320MW Deal with India Inked

Two top state-run entities of Bangladesh and India have signed a deal in New Delhi that would immediately pave the way for joint venture for a 1320 MW thermal power project in Khulna, with scopes open for another with equal capacity in Chittagong.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed on Monday between Bangladesh Power Development Board and India's National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, is intended to give a push to bilateral cooperation for development of power sector in Bangladesh.

ICC to Inspect Pitches for World Cup

The ICC's pitch consultant Andy Atkinson will be visiting India in early September to inspect six out of the eight venues in the country for the 2011 World Cup.

Among the six is the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, the host for the controversial India-Sri Lanka ODI in December 2009 which was abandoned due to an unfit pitch.

Genzyme Breaks Silence to Rebuff Sanofi

US biotech Genzyme broke its five-week silence to reject an $18.5 billion takeover proposal by French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis on Monday, dismissing it as opportunistic and too low.

Sanofi Chief Executive Chris Viehbacher confirmed his $69 per share non-binding cash offer for Genzyme on Sunday, hinting he could make a hostile takeover bid following several unsuccessful attempts to hold talks with Genzyme management.

The 5th population and housing census will be carried out in the country for five days from Mar 15 next year.

Planning minister A K Khandker told journalists that the decision was taken at a meeting of the National Statistics Council, held at the Statistics Building at the capital's Agargaon, on Thursday.
