At least five people were killed and several more were critically injured in a series of bomb explosions in China's far west region of Xinjiang, in what looks increasingly like a concerted bombing campaign by Muslim separatists to coincide with the Beijing Olympics, reports Reuters. Witnesses described how attackers threw home made bombs at a police station and office buildings, injuring police and security guards and destroying two police cars. Five of the attackers were reported to have been killed at the scene. |

The pullout followed three days of fighting in a Georgian push to take control of the pro-Moscow enclave from separatists, which prompted Russia to pour troops into South Ossetia and launch air strikes inside its small neighbor. |

Reuters, Damacus- Syria is willing to answer questions by the UN nuclear watchdog about an alleged nuclear complex but has not agreed with the agency to allow more visits to the site, a foreign ministry statement said on Saturday. In June, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the al-Kibar complex, which Israeli warplanes raided last year. Syria says the site is a military complex under construction and denies any nuclear activity. |

Reuters, Milan- The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has raised its forecast of 2008 world paddy rice production by more than 1 million tonnes to 668 million tonnes after improved harvests in India and some other major producers. The 2008 world production is 1.5 percent higher than a record output of 658 million tonnes in 2007, FAO said in a rice report released late on Friday. |

NEW DELHI, Sun Aug 10,(bdnews24.com/Reuters) - A strong earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The department had initially reported the quake at magnitude 6.6. The US Geological Survey measured it at 6.0. Officials said there were no reports of damages from the tremor which struck 145 km southwest of Port Blair, capital of India's remote Andaman islands at 0822 GMT. |
