GM offers more fuel - efficient pickup trucks, SUVs PDF Print E-mail

AP, DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. is releasing new, more fuel-efficient versions of its full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles later this fall.

The XFE -- or extra fuel economy -- versions of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs will get one mile per gallon more in both city and highway fuel economy than non-XFE versions. The boost will give them a total of 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 on the highway.

A Dhaka court has ordered former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and all other accused persons to appear on Aug 20 when it frames charges in the MiG-29 warplanes purchase corruption case.

Judge Golam Mortuza Mojumdar of Dhaka Divisional Special Judge's Court gave the order Tuesday in his special courtroom set up in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex.

Police on Sunday night recovered 78 counterfoils and one unused ballot paper allegedly used and meant for use respectively in the recent Khulna City Corporation election.

The papers were recovered from near the office of BNP leader and mayor candidate Md Moniruzzaman Moni at Haji Mohsin Road in the city.

The High Court has stayed the proceedings of a tax evasion case against BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman.

The bench of Justice ABM Khairul Haque and Justice Md Abu Tariq passed the stay order on a writ petition by Tarique challenging the legality of the case filed by the National Board of Revenue.

AP, SINGAPORE -- Oil prices fell Tuesday in Asia to a 3-month low as a stronger dollar and weakening crude demand from China weighed on investor sentiment.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $1.45 to $113 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by late afternoon in Singapore. The contract lost 75 cents overnight to settle at $114.45, the lowest close for a floor session since May 1.

Home adviser MA Matin said Tuesday that a court order, requiring Sheikh Hasina to appear for charge framing in the MiG-29 graft case, would have to be examined before the next step is taken in this regard.

Dhaka Divisional Special Judge's Court had earlier in the day ordered all accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to be present for charge framing in the case on Aug 20.

A Dhaka court Tuesday sentenced Orion Group boss Obaidul Karim to five years in prison for money laundering.

Judge Md Ashraf Hossain, of Special Judge's Court-5 set up in the Sangsad Bhaban area, handed down the verdict Tuesday and also fined Obaidul Tk 2 crore or another year in prison on failure to pay the fine.

Charge have been pressed against local film industry figure and Dhaka City Corporation commissioner Monwar Hossain Dipjol and wife Romana Monwar, on charges of earning illegal wealth and giving false information to the anticorruption commission.

ACC assistant director Md Talebur Rahman submitted the charge sheets Tuesday with the chief metropolitan magistrate's court against the accused, mentioning that Dipjol has been sentenced to 17 years and eight years in two separate arms cases.

Dhaka, August 12 (bdnews24.com)— British envoy Stephen Evans said Tuesday a consensus should be sought between the government and political parties on the tenure of emergency and holding elections, as a number of parties including Awami League appear to see no acceptable polls amid emergency.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the AL acting president Zillur Rahman, Evans added, however, that the present caretaker government is indicating that it would like to hold the elections in a more congenial environment, and see the emergency gradually lifting if circumstances should allow it.
