Some political parties in Bangladesh see the resignation of 'autocrat' Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf as the victory of the people of Pakistan and hoped democracy would strengthen in that country.

"All military autocrats relinquish power only after earning the wrath of the people. This has also happened in the case of Pervez Musharraf," Awami League presidium member Motia Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed Monday asked top civil servants to defy all threats and fear and stick to their jobs in the general elections slated for December.

"The responsibility goes to all to create an atmosphere conducive to holding a free and fair election," the chief adviser told secretaries to the ministries and divisions at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Eighty-two Bangladeshis, who were travelling to the United Arab Emirates as migrant workers, were sent back Monday as they could not present the proper visas at Dubai airport, an immigration official said.

The UAE, a relatively new destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, is the third country to send back Bangladeshis for various irregularities over the past month.

Bangladesh Chhatra League held demonstrations on Chittagong University campus Sunday against an attack by Islami Chhatra Shibir supporters on a Bangabandhu mourning procession the previous day.

Leaders of the Awami League student wing said they would continue their protests until their 'eight demands' were met, including punishment by expulsion of the Shibir activists they said were tied to the attacks.

Registration of political parties will start soon under the Representation of the People Order (amendment) Ordinance 2008 is expected to be gazetted shortly, chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda said on Monday.

"We hope the gazette will be published in a day or two. The process of registration of political parties starts after that," the CEC told reporters in his office.

Internee doctors at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital went on strike Sunday in protest at the assault of a doctor after the death of a patient, police said.

Acting director of the hospital Dr Anisul Karim said the authorities were urgently trying to resolve the crisis as the strike put hundreds of patients of the hospital in trouble.

Trial of a Tk 3 crore extortion case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resumed Monday, after the Supreme Court overrode a High Court ruling that had cancelled the case as illegally tried under emergency powers rules.

The plaintiff of the case continued with his statement to the court, after a break of over sixth months, before the defence began cross-examining him in the makeshift Special Judge's Court- 5 of Md Ashraf Hossain.

AP, NEW YORK  -- Crude prices dropped below $113 a barrel in volatile trading Monday as Tropical Storm Fay swirled toward Florida but appeared unlikely to disrupt oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $1.17 to $112.60 in morning trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier rising as high as $115.35.

At least 200 million people around the world risk their health daily by eating food grown using untreated waste water, some of which may be contaminated with heavy metals and raw sewage, according to major study of 53 world cities, reports The Guardian.

Urban farmers in 80% of the cities surveyed were found to be using untreated waste water.
