Bangladesh canceled plans to send rare artifacts to Paris PDF Print E-mail

Bangladesh wants a consignment of ancient artifacts on loan to France for an upcoming exhibition to be returned after two 1,500 year-old statues of the Hindu God Vishnu were stolen while awaiting shipment from Dhaka airport.

"The Guimet Museum (in Paris) would be informed, regretfully, that it would not be possible to go ahead with holding the exhibition of the items as planned," a statement from the office of the head of the interim government said on Tuesday.

Police in Bangladesh are searching for two statues of the Hindu god Vishnu which were stolen from Dhaka airport. The statues were to be flown to Paris with other artefacts for an art exhibition at the Guimet Museum when they went missing on Saturday night. Dhaka police say they are questioning 12 people they have detained in connection with the theft.

With the second largest festival for Muslims approaching fast, once again cattle markets filled with various animals for sacrifice shall be witnessing presence of a large number of black money holders who will make newspaper headlines by buying bulls with a few hundred thousand taka.  Although right after declaration of the State of Emergency in the country, most of the black money holders virtually entered into the ‘black holes’, pulling back their most expensive and luxurious Hammer type vehicles from city roads, invariably they will once again appear in country’s cattle markets.

With its brightly painted mudguards, plastic streamers and embroidered hood, Nasir Howlader's cycle rickshaw was his pride and joy until last month's cyclone left its mangled parts strewn across the rice fields of southern Bangladesh.The rickshaw -- which Howlader finished paying for only weeks before Cyclone Sidr struck -- was also his livelihood. Without it his future in this impoverished country looks precarious.

Birshreshtha Hamidur Rahman was finally laid to eternal rest in his homeland yesterday with the highest state honours, 36 years after he embraced martyrdom during a battle with Pakistan occupation forces.

Before the burial, the nation paid homage to the Liberation War hero as the coffin with his remains reached the National Parade Square in the capital in the morning.

December 10, marks the 60th anniversary of United Nation's historic Genocide Convention, which is significant for Bangladesh, surviving a brutal genocide.

In his speech titled “60th anniversary of Genocide Convention and Bangladesh”, Mafidul Haque said, “According to the Genocide Convention, the government of the state as well as the UN are responsible to initiate the trials of war criminals. However, we have not found any initiative as of yet in our country.”

With a full state honors, Bangladesh on Tuesday laid to rest a teenage war hero killed almost four decades ago fighting Pakistani forces during the country's independence war.
Hamidur Rahman died in 1971 at the age of 17 while raiding a Pakistani military post in what was then known as East Pakistan, which months later gained independence and became Bangladesh.
