At least five people have been killed in an attack by suspected militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police say, reports BBC.

Police say it is not yet clear whether it was a bomb or a grenade attack in the summer capital, Srinagar, which killed the four children and a woman.

REUTERS, WASHINGTON- The Bush administration has proposed shifting $226.5 million in US counterterrorism aid to Pakistan to upgrade Pakistani F-16 fighters, US officials said on Thursday.

The plan has provoked some opposition in the US Congress, where an influential lawmaker questioned how upgraded F-16s, which are widely seen as aimed at countering any threat from India, would be used against al Qaeda and Taliban forces.

AFP, MANILA - A Qantas Boeing 747 flying to Melbourne made an emergency landing in Manila on Friday after a dramatic mid-air rupture that punched a "gaping hole" in its fuselage, officials and passengers said.

Stunned passengers reported how the jumbo, which had taken off from London and made a stopover in Hong Kong, plunged nearly 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) in what one said was an "absolutely terrifying" ordeal.

At a ceremony in Beijing to unveil the squad of 639 athletes, basketball star Yao, reigning 110m Olympic champion Liu Xiang and dozens of others vowed in unison to do the nation of 1.3 billion people proud.

REUTERS, NEW YORK- Two forms of oxygen therapy may help manage two types of debilitating headache pain, a new research review suggests.

In a review of nine small clinical trials, the researchers found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy showed promise for halting pain during migraine attacks. A similar treatment -- normobaric, or normal-pressure, oxygen therapy -- eased pain in people suffering from cluster headaches.

AFP, NICOSIA  - Rival Cypriot leaders on Friday set September 3 as the date when they will begin direct negotiations on ending the island's 34-year-old division.

During a two-hour meeting, President Demetris Christofias, a Greek Cypriot, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat also decided that the results hammered out between them will be put to referendums in their two communities.

At least 42 passengers have drowned when a boat struck a rock and sank in the Ubangi river in the Democratic Republic of Congo, government officials say, reports internet source.

Rescue workers saved at least 22 passengers, but 115 more were reported missing on Friday.

AFP, WASHINGTON - Explosions of magnetic energy between Earth and the moon are behind the sparkles and wavy glows of the Northern Lights that color the night sky, NASA has said.

A network of five satellites of a mission known as THEMIS that studied the phenomenon for a year helped researchers lift the veil from some of the mystery behind the aurora borealis.

The pact, which would make India a de facto nuclear power despite not signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty and conducting nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, ran into trouble after Singh's government faced a revolt by its former communist allies, culminating in Tuesday's parliamentary vote of confidence.
