Dhanmondi police took three people into custody on remand Saturday, after they were arrested on charges of receiving bribes from former judge and caretaker government adviser M Fazlul Huq, a police officer said.

Chief metropolitan magistrate ME Islam Hossain approved three days' remand for interrogation, though police requested seven days, investigation officer of the case Amirul Islam told bdnews24.com.

REUTERS, PATNA, India- Authorities struggling to provide aid after devastating floods in Bihar said on Sunday they needed more boats and rescuers to help hundreds of thousands of people still marooned in remote villages.

Bad weather and heavy rain over the past few days have hampered rescue and relief operations in the worst-ever floods to hit Bihar state in 50 years, officials said.

REUTERS, GENEVA- As ministers from over 100 countries gather in Ghana to review how effective aid is in helping developing nations deal with poverty, many economists argue the answer is elsewhere -- in freeing up trade.

The meeting in Accra this week comes just over a month after talks at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to secure a breakthrough in the long-running Doha round collapsed at the end of July.

The long-awaited verdict of the jail killing case is finally declared .The High Court has upheld the death sentence of one fugitive accused Resalder (Rtd) Muslemuddin and life imprisonment of eight others who are on the run and did not appeal and acquitted two fugitive death convicts and four detained former army officers - Lt Col Syed Farooque Rahman, Lt Col (Rtd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Maj (Rtd) Bazlul Huda and Maj (Rtd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed who were sentenced to life in jail.

AFP, PARIS  - Delivery of a second Airbus A380 to Emirates, the airline of the United Arab Emirates, may suffer a further delay of several weeks, an Emirates spokeswoman told AFP on Saturday.

"We are negotiating with Airbus the delivery date of a second A380. Airbus notified Emirates of a possible delay of a few weeks," the spokeswoman said, without clarifying when Emirates will receive the plane.

AP, NEW YORK -- Retail gas prices swung higher Friday -- the first increase in 43 days -- as analysts warned that a direct hit on U.S. energy infrastructure by Hurricane Gustav could send pump prices hurtling toward $5 a gallon.

Meanwhile, oil prices ended the day slightly lower, falling for a second straight session. But prices fluctuated sharply as some traders feared supply disruptions and others bet the government will release supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if Gustav wreaks havoc in the Gulf of Mexico area -- home to a quarter of U.S. crude supplies and 40 percent of refining capacity.

The historic speech by the first African-American presidential nominee of a major political party reached 38.4 million viewers on 10 broadcast and cable networks, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. PBS estimated that an additional 3.5 million had watched its prime-time coverage.

A search and rescue team recovered the body of a drowned Stamford University student Saturday, 22 hours after he went missing at Madhabkundu falls at Moulavi Bazar, a police official said.

The rescuers, who started their operation early in the morning, retrieved the body of 22 year-old Al Fateh Mohammad Shahi around 11am, Baralekha sub inspector of police Jahangir Hossain told bdnews24.com.
