AP, HOUSTON -- Royal Dutch Shell, BP and other oil companies wrapped up evacuations and shut down production Saturday as an intensifying Hurricane Gustav churned toward the petroleum-rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

As of midday Saturday, slightly more than three-fourths of the Gulf's oil production and nearly 40 percent of its natural gas output had been shut down, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, which oversees offshore activity.

Wastage of gas

Reports have it that  gas is being wasted away at the source, that is, through uncontrolled leakage at the Brahmanbaria Titas Gas fields. These leakages of gas through different cracks spreading over four kilometers of area around the gas field has been going on since 2003 and since then an estimated one billion cubic feet of gas has simply disappeared into air. Titas Gas officials are saying that "after visiting the fields, experts are now engaged in studying the issue".

Residents have been ordered to flee New Orleans as the city braces for its worst hurricane since Katrina struck with devastating force three years ago.

Hurricane Gustav, which has been upgraded to category four, has already killed more than 80 people in the Caribbean and fears of a repeat of the devastation caused by Katrina, when the US government was shamed by images of people stranded without relief, prompted the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, to issue a stark warning last night.

Thousands of people marched in the historic Merdeka (Freedom) Square, watched by Malaysia's king and government leaders. Fighter planes and helicopters roamed the sky above.

REUTERS, TUNCELI- Four Turkish security personnel and two Kurdish separatists were killed early on Sunday after rebels launched a rocket attack on a military station in eastern Turkey, a security source told Reuters.

The initial attack occurred around 1 a.m. (6 a.m. EDT) in Bingol province, when around 15-20 members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) shot rockets and long range firearms at the security headquarters, the source said.

Holly Budge, 29, plans to throw herself out from 465 feet (142 metres) above Everest, hurtling past it, before landing in a mountain meadow at 12,350 feet (3,764 metres).

Senior religious councils in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates said the moon's crescent was not sighted after nightfall on Saturday, and so Sunday would be the last day of the month preceding Ramadan.

BNP secretary general Khandker Delwar Hossain has slammed Awami League's criticism over Tarique Rahman securing bail as an "aspersion on the judiciary".

Speaking at a press briefing Saturday, after a joint meeting of the party, Delwar said: "[Syed Ashraful Islam] accused Tarique Rahman of being the 'world champion' of corruption. But no truth has been found in the cases filed against him."
