REUTERS, ST LOUIS- Republican presidential candidate John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, on Sunday issued some of his harshest criticism to date of the use of torture against terrorism suspects during President George W Bush's administration.

In an interview on Fox News, the Arizona senator laid out his differences with Bush on a number of issues, citing torture as a key sticking point between him and the current president.

Though prices of edible oil, onion and gram flour have registered falls on the eve of Ramadan, market prices of other essentials have risen—with the cost of green chillis being hiked a massive Tk 40 per kg within a span of two days.

Anticorruption Commission chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury said Monday that the spate of bail orders for graft suspects and stay orders on corruption cases has hurt the image of the antigraft body.

"It may seem to people that the ACC is not working the way it did before. But it should not be said until the apex court of the country gives verdicts in the cases," Hasan Mashhud told reporters in his office.

Floodwater that has risen in 16 out of 17 districts may climb slightly higher over the next couple of days, but the overall flood situation in the country is not expected to assume dire proportions, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said Monday.

A special court in Gazipur on Monday sentenced outlawed JMB leader Abdullah al Mamun Sohail, also known as 'Zahid' and 'Akash', to a total of 34 years in jail in two cases.

Judge SM Rezaul Karim of Gazipur Special Court sentenced him to 14 years in jail in an arms case and 20 years in an explosives case, both filed against him with Tongi Police Station on Feb 2 in 2006.

The vast Greenland ice sheet could begin to melt more rapidly than expected towards the end of the century, accelerating the rise in sea levels as a result of global warming, scientists warned yesterday.

Water running off the ice sheet could triple the current rate of sea level rise to around 9mm a year, leading to a global rise of almost 1 metre per century, the researchers found.
