The Truth and Accountability Commission after two days of hearings has ordered 11 people to deposit a total of Tk 5.69 crore to state funds.

"This is a preliminary order. The final verdict in the cases will be given after the people show proof of payment," TAC chairman justice Habibur Rahman Khan told a press briefing Wednesday.

Tax authorities would not ask new taxpayers about their income and would welcome any amount they pay for three years, the National Board of Revenue chairman said on Wednesday.

"Those who will spontaneously register as taxpayers will not face any question for three years. The NBR will accept any amount they pay during the period," Md Abdul Mazid told representatives of various clubs of Dhaka and Narayanganj at his office.

The Election Commission has formed a five-member committee to verify the applications from political parties for registration, an official said on Wednesday.

"The committee is meant to check if the documents submitted by the parties were accurate," said AKM Salimullah, a deputy secretary at the EC secretariat.

Hundreds of BNP supporters thronged the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hospital and its fringes at Shahbagh in the city on Wednesday to cheer the imminent release of senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman, reports bdnews24.com.

Chief political correspondent Suman Mahmud said from the scene that services at the hospital appeared to be on the verge of collapse as BNP supporters flocked to the hospital and nearby areas on the news that Tarique was to be released sometime in the afternoon.

Embankment gives in

The flood control embankment of the Jamuna river gave in at Talukder Para point under Sariakandi upazila in Bogra early Wednesday, leaving four villages inundated, a Water Development Board official said.

Some 150 feet of the embankment at Chandan Baisha's Talukder Para collapsed shortly after 4am that hit the main dam.

Foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury on Wednesday briefed Kuwait's deputy prime minister on the plight of Bangladeshi workers in his country.

DPM Sheikh Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah assured Iftekhar—who arrived on a two-day state visit to Kuwait earlier in the day—the Kuwaiti government would take stern measures against companies that exploited foreign workers.

From next year, the Water Development Board will be able to forecast floods 10 days ahead of their onslaught, an adviser said Wednesday.

At present, the WDB says it can forecast "with 100 percent accuracy" 72 hours ahead of floods.

A Dhaka court Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against former Bangladeshi ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Nazimullah Chowdhury for misappropriation of public funds.

Nazimullah is accused of stealing Tk 20 lakh from the state by showing fake bills and vouchers, while serving as an ambassador.

AP, NEW YORK -- Oil prices kept falling Wednesday as a stronger dollar and slowing demand for crude overshadowed an almost total shutdown of energy output in the Gulf of Mexico after the passage of Hurricane Gustav.

Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell $1.05 to $108.66 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier dipping as low as $107.22.

"We are now only awaiting the remainder document only, which may be sent to us any time today (Tuesday). It is possible that Tarique Rahman will be released today provided the last bit of paper work is complete and it reaches us," Gen Hasan said Tuesday morning.

Dhaka, Sept 2 (bdnews24.com) — Tarique Rahman's wife Zobaida Rahman and other visitors left his bedside at BSMMU Hospital around 8pm Tuesday, signalling that the detained BNP leader would not be released on bail before Wednesday.

Inspector general of prisons, Brigadier general Zakir Hasan had said ealrier in the evening that detainees are not normally released if their papers are not processed by 6pm.
