Asian markets mixed after US bails out insurer PDF Print E-mail

AP, HONG KONG -- Asian stocks turned in a mixed performance Wednesday, giving up early gains as a U.S. plan to rescue troubled insurer AIG failed to persuade many investors that recent financial turmoil would soon ease.

European shares were higher in early trade.

Asia's markets opened mostly higher as Wall Street's rise overnight lifted sentiment after Tuesday's huge sell-off. Japan's Nikkei 225 average added 1.2 percent to 11,749.79 after sinking nearly 5 percent the day before to its lowest finish in more than three years.

Iraq is being flooded with weapons despite human rights violations by all parties in the conflict there, and without any proper monitoring by the US and Britain over where the weapons end up, Amnesty International says today.

There is no clear accountable audit trail for some 360,000 small arms supplied to the Iraqi security forces, many by the US and UK, it says.

The first batch of transparent ballot boxes intended for use in the upcoming national polls have arrived in Dhaka, with the Election Commission scheduled to receive them on Wednesday, an EC official said Tuesday.

"The first shipment containing 35,000 transparent ballot boxes reached Kamalapur Inland Container Terminal on Monday evening, and they will be released on Wednesday," EC Secretariat joint secretary Rafikul Islam told bdnews24.com.

AFP, JERUSALEM - Members of Israel's governing Kadima party were voting for a new leader on Wednesday, with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni favoured by opinion polls to replace scandal-plagued Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Livni, who was expected to benefit if turnout proved high, urged Kadima members to come out and vote for a new party leader -- who could go on to become prime minister.

AFP, BEIJING - China said Wednesday more than 6,000 babies had fallen ill and three died after drinking milk powder contaminated with a toxic chemical, as it vowed massive efforts to contain a widening food scandal.

In the latest debacle to tarnish the "Made in China" label, authorities admitted two of 22 companies found to have melamine in their milk powder were exporting abroad, and that tainted yogurt had been found in Hong Kong.

Zimbabwe's new prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, yesterday described Robert Mugabe as "giving up" and said that he would seek to govern by sidelining the beleaguered president whose own party is "moving on" without him.

But, in an interview with the Guardian, Tsvangirai acknowledged that a climate of suspicion and mistrust between his own Movement for Democratic Change and Mugabe's Zanu-PF party would test his political skills as prime minister at the head of a coalition government of former opponents - some of whom are responsible for overseeing a vicious campaign of violence against other members of the new administration.

The High Court on Wednesday granted three months' bail to a number of BNP leaders including Mir Nasiruddin, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, AKM Mosharraf Hossain, Zafrul Islam Chowdhury, Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan, Daud Saluddin, Manjurul Ahsan Munshi and Ariful Haque Chowdhury.

The vacation bench of justices Mirza Hossain Haider and Mamnun Rahman in the orders also halted the sentences of former state ministers Mir Nasiruddin, Amanullah Aman, Tuku, Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbbas for the same period.

The government will send a team of scientists and technical experts to China to put the Rooppur nuclear power plant on stream with Chinese assistance, an adviser said on Wednesday.

The Chinese leaders pledged in talks with chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, now visiting China, to help Dhaka to implement the nuclear power plant for producing electricity, foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told bdnews24.com from Beijing by telephone.

The monsoon deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Orissa coast, is likely to move in a north-northwesterly direction further inland and weaken gradually, said a special weather bulletin.

It moved slightly northwestwards and crossed Orissa-West Bengal coasts of India near Baleshwar early Wednesday morning and lies over Orissa, West Bengal and adjoining coastal areas as a land depression, said the issued by the Storm Warning Centre of Bangladesh Meteorological Department at 9:41am.
