Agriculture adviser CS Karim, who is leading a Bangladesh delegation to the NAM Ministerial Conference in Tehran, has emphasised the present and future impact of climate change, a government statement said Wednesday.

The adviser also stressed the current global issue of food security in the two-day conference that started at the OIC Convention Centre in Tehran Wednesday.

REUTERS, KUWAIT- Inflation-hit Kuwait is considering raising the minimum wage to 40 dinars ($151) after Bangladesh workers staged a strike demanding better pay, state news agency KUNA reported.

The Kuwaiti government reached an agreement with the workers on Monday to end a three-day strike over pay and working conditions against a backdrop of soaring inflation, which exceeded 11 percent in April and May.

The home ministry announced Wednesday that no one will be permitted to move about carrying firearms, including licensed guns, to be enforced in election areas a day ahead of the city corporation and municipal polls until the day after.

"In the interest of public security, the government hereby proscribes all movements carrying licenced firearms in the election areas starting 02 August midnight till 05 August midnight," said a home ministry circular issued Wednesday.

The Saudi Arabian government has deported 118 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh back home, an immigration official said Wednesday.

"The 118 Bangladeshis returned by a Yemen Airlines flight Wednesday morning," immigration officer at Zia International Airport Rokonuzzaman told bdnews24.com.

The UK's Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Hazel Blears has said interests of Britain and Bangladeshi people depend on the restoration of democracy.

"Sustainable democracy has to be the ultimate goal for Bangladesh. The UK's interests in Bangladesh, and those of the Bangladeshi people, depend on establishing a stable and democratic Bangladesh," Blears said in a statement released Wednesday, on the eve of her visit to Bangladesh.

Four people died and six were injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Jessore-Khulna highway on Wednesday, a police official said.

The accident occurred around 8am as a Khulna-bound bus from Jessore collided with a Jessore-bound tagger (local passenger vehicle) at Gopalpur Gate, leaving four people dead on the spot, Jessore Kotwali police chief Abul Bashar told bdnews24.com.

Indices on the Dhaka Stock Exchange ended lower for a third day due to a decline in blue-chips.

A fall in share prices of insurers, banks and mutual funds also influenced Wednesday's trading.

A sharp fall in the benchmark DGEN or general index marked the day's opening. It however returned from losses immediately before maintaining a downward curve across the trading session. It lost 24.57 points or 0.86 percent to end on 2801.42.

As recriminations began, the head of World Trade Organisation, Pascal Lamy, warned that the wrangling among the organisation's leading members had allowed a package worth more than $130bn (£65bn) a year in tariff savings to "slip through their fingers".

Kuwait will deport some of the 500 Bangladeshis who were involved in damaging vehicles and attacking the police in the gulf kingdom, an official said Wednesday.

As many as 300 out of the 800 Bangladeshis arrested on charge of creating "trouble" in Kuwait streets have been released for their "innocence", according to the foreign ministry.

AP, NEW YORK -- Oil prices are slightly higher, hovering near $123 a barrel, after the government reported that U.S. gasoline supplies fell unexpectedly last week while crude stockpiles fell less than expected.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery is up 74 cents at $122.93 a barrel in morning trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract had fallen below $121 a barrel earlier in the day.

The High Court has recently struck down two ordinances signed by the President on the contention that the Emergency Government "has no authority to enact any law which is not related to election and emergency issues". Lawyers are saying that other ordinances, if challenged before the High Court may also be cancelled or annulled in the same way and for the same reasons.

Interest of local ones be given priority

Appointment of foreign doctors and nurses in the private hospitals and clinics of Bangladesh has recently drawn attention of the government. With a view to controlling and streamlining such appointments, the ministry of health has almost finalized a set of guidelines to this effect. When approved, the foreign doctors and nurses would have to take registration from the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council and the Directorate of Nursing respectively for being employed in any local private health facility in the country.

Forget cola, lemonade or beer – Japanese people sweltering in the summer heat now have a new canned drink to quench their thirst – made out of eels, reports AP.

The fishy drink Unagi Nobori – which translates as "Surging Eel" – contains eel extract and vitamins found in the fish. The fizzy yellow liquid is believed to be the first mass-produced drink of its kind made in the country.
