Dhaka Metropolitan Police have requested the education ministry to shut down all schools and colleges in the capital from 10 Ramadan in a bid to ease traffic congestion.

At the same time, it urged authorities of shopping malls and markets to initiate community policing.

The request was made at a meeting of shop owners' representatives and senior police officials headed by Dhaka city police chief AKM Shahidul Haque on Sunday.

A number of decisions were made at the meeting including banning automobile parking on streets in front of shopping malls, enforcement of regulations barring random pick up and dropping of passengers, and banning rickshaws, vans and human haulers outside the metropolitan area from entering the city.

A DMP statement also stated steps to maintain law and order during Ramadan. These include formation of joint teams consisting of market committee members, police and Rapid Action Battalion, deployment of male and female police at shopping malls, banning hawkers on streets in front of markets and increasing patrols of plainclothes police officials.

Senior police officials will also visit the malls regularly.

It was also decided that price charts of everyday goods will be displayed at the markets during Ramadan.

Senior police officials, including joint commissioners Amullyah Bhushan Barua and Mohammed Manzur Kader Khan, and shop owners association member Khoka Shikder and Masud Kader Mona were present at the meeting.
