A garment worker was beaten to death allegedly by a construction worker over altercation in the city’s Mirpur area early Sunday. The deceased was identified as Mazharul Islam Munna, 24, son of Khalilur Rahman, of Dakkhin Ramzanpur under Kalkini upazila in Madaripur, and also a knitting operator of Babylon Fashion Ltd located at Khejur Bagan in Ashulia.

The police said Munna came from Ashulia to visit his elder brother Momen at an under-construction building at Block-C, Section-11, House-14 in Mirpur. Quoting witnesses the police said Alamgir Hossain, a construction worker and also a roommate of Momen, locked in an altercation with Munna over arrangement of sleeping place at around 1:30am.

At one stage, Alamgir attacked Munna with a wooden stick and started hitting him in the head, shoulder and face until he became unconscious. Hearing screams, local people and some workers of the building rushed to the scene and rescued bloodstained Munna in an unconscious state. Munna was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died from his wounds at around 3:45am. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy. The duty officer of the Mirpur police station said victim’s elder brother filed a case in this connection.
