CCCI for scrapping of gas supply deal with KAFCO PDF Print E-mail

The business community in Chittagong has asked the government to scrap the gas supply deal with Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company and provide gas connections for other industrial units in the city.

"The KAFCO deal is destroying the country," Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, alleged at a press conference at the CCCI office.

Two workers of a ship breaking firm were killed in gas cylinder explosion while breaking ship at Shitalpur in Sitakundu upazila here Sunday night.

Police said gas cylinder of a foreign ship exploded when the workers of Namrin Ship Breaking yard were breaking it about 10pm on Sunday leaving Abdul Zahed and Abdur Razzak, 27, dead on the spot.

The police Monday cited demand for money as an early lead to the killing of writer Momena Ahmed, the widow of a Dhaka University teacher.

The 65-year-old writer, the wife of the late chairman of Dhaka University's Applied Physics Department Sultan Ahmed, was knifed to death at her Dhanmondi home Monday.

Slaughtered bodies of two youths were found at Nabiabad in Debidwar upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway Saturday morning, reports UNB.

On information by local people, police recovered the bodies Faruqur Rahman, 30, son of Roushan Ali of Nabiabad and Selim Hossain, 30, son of Nurul Islam of nearby village and sent those to hospital morgue for autopsy.

At least 20 workers were injured, five of them seriously, amid violence triggered by an attack by goons at a garment factory in the DEPZ new zone on Saturday, reports UNB.

Sources said a clash ensued at about 8am between the workers of ''Shine Fashion Ltd'' and a local terrorist gang when the outsiders attacked them over Thursday''s work-abstention programme in the factory.

A court here sentenced three persons to death and two others life imprisonment for killing a man at village Durlobpur under Alamdanga upazila of the district in 1994, reports agency.

Court sources said the each of the convicts on the death row has been fined Taka one lakh each while those punished with life imprisonment Taka 50 thousand each.

Pabna Jail Superintendent and two guards were accused in a case of taking Tk 1 lakh as bribe from Bera pourasava officials, reports UNB.

Jail guard Akteruzzaman filed the case with Pabna Sadar thana. It said jail subedar Ishaq and guard Azizul in connivance with Superintendent Rezaul Karim allowed the Accountant and Engineer of  Bera pourasava to meet poura chairman Abdul Baten in the jail after taking Tk 1 lakh as bribe from them.

Silk line mourns

Begum Hazera Khatun, wife of late businessman and social worker S.H.Khan and mother of former National Cricket Captain Akram Khan and footballer Iqbal Khan breathed her last at Square Hospital after prolonged illness on Friday last, said a press release. She was 76.

She is survived by five sons, five daughters, grandchildren and a host of relatives. National cricketers Nafis Iqbal and Tamim Iqbal are her grandsons.
