Ten people were injured when transport workers and the police fought pitched battles at an inter-district bus station in the port city on Sunday, halting bus operations and stranding homebound people.

The police and local people said shortly before midday a patrol police had beaten the driver of a bus of Palki Paribahan after he had tried to drive the bus off the queue at Kadamtala inter-district bus station.

The targeted locations of these dishonest traders are city's Chaktai, Khatungonj, Asadgonj and some other areas.

In the meantime, the firms have started producing very poor quality ghee, vermicelli, noodles, powder of pepper , tarmeric and other spices.

Unidentified gunmen shot dead a businessman and a taxi driver in separate incidents in the city on Friday, police said.

Businessman Jasimuddin, 42, was killed in Sabujbagh while taxi driver Rakib Hossain Abu, 28, in Kafrul.

Sub-inspector Ashraf Ali of Kafrul Police Station told bdnews24.com that some gunmen opened fire at Rakib at around 2:30pm while he was drinking tea at his father Yunus Ali's stall in East Kazipara.

Part of the renowned Batali hill, the city's tallest, collapsed Saturday afternoon, damaging a number of temporary structures on the slopes and at the foot of the hill.
