4 swimmers dead, 3 missing in N.Y. ocean waters PDF Print E-mail

AP, NEW YORK - Four swimmers drowned and three were missing Saturday in two days of treacherous ocean currents at Long Island and New York City beaches, authorities said. At least three more had been rescued.

The missing included a 10-year-old girl who had been playing in the waters off Coney Island. A 10-year-old boy who was with her was rescued, police said.

AP, PITTSBURGH - Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose "last lecture" about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, died Friday. He was 47.

Pausch died at his home in Chesapeake, Va., said Jeffrey Zaslow, a Wall Street Journal writer who co-wrote Pausch's book. Pausch and his family had moved there last fall to be closer to his wife's relatives.

Two paparazzi photographers wearing camouflage gear have clashed with bodyguards for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as the couple worked to finalise a reported $11 million deal for the first official pictures of their new twins

The security chief for the Hollywood stars said the photographers had invaded the grounds of their French estate but the paparazzi claimed they were attacked in a neighbouring public forest.

Both sides have confirmed there was angry fistfight as the snappers tried snatch a picture that could sabotage the exclusive deal following the birth of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. Police were called after the altercation.

Danny Glover's slavery film lacked "white heroes", producers said PDF Print E-mail

AFP, PARIS - US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.

"Producers said 'It's a nice project, a great project... where are the white heroes?'" he told AFP during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.

AP, LONDON - Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.

The 34-year-old actor spent four hours at a London police station before being released on bail.
 
British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, "The Dark Knight."

AP, QUEBEC CITY, Quebec - Paul McCartney churned out a Beatles-laden song list to a pumped-up crowd gathered Sunday for a free concert as part of Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebration.

McCartney opened the show with the Wings song "Jet" after which he greeted the crowd in French. The audience erupted and the band then started into the Beatles' 1965 classic "Drive My Car."

REUTERS, LONDON  - The husband of singer Amy Winehouse was ordered to serve about four and a half more months in prison on Monday after he pleaded guilty to attacking a pub landlord in 2006 and then trying to cover it up.

Blake Fielder-Civil, 26, sat with his three co-defendants before judge David Radford at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London as the sentences were read out.

AP, LOS ANGELES - Batman's joust with the Joker has set another box office record.

Stoked by fan fever over the manic performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, "The Dark Knight" set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Saturday.

The movie's Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." "The Dark Knight" might break the opening-weekend record of $151.1 million, also held by "Spider-Man 3."

REUTERS, LOS ANGELES - Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C and says she probably contracted the liver disease from drug use more than 30 years ago.

REUTERS, OTTAWA - The lead singer of the popular Canadian band the Barenaked Ladies will fight a recent cocaine charge in the United States, the band said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

Steven Page was arrested last Friday in an apartment in Fayetteville, New York, and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Court documents show Page allegedly told police "Yeah, it's cocaine", when asked about a white powdery substance in his possession.

FX also announced on Tuesday that Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden ("Pollock") will be joining the Glenn Close legal drama "Damages" as a second-season series regular, while Ted Danson will return to the show for several episodes.
