NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, July 30 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Christians and Muslims mistrust each other so much that a few terrorist attacks could trigger dramatic and violent religious tensions, a Jordanian prince told an interfaith conference on Tuesday.

Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal, sponsor of a Muslim appeal to Christian leaders to work together for peace, said the two religions must work together or face possible violence that risks turning into genocide.

China seeks 'absolute security' in Tibet for Olympics PDF Print E-mail

Beijing,July 30 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Chinese police guarding restive Tibet have been mobilised to ensure "absolute security" there during the Beijing Olympics and are looking for stronger international support, an official newspaper said on Wednesday.

China says followers of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, fomented riots and protests across the mountain region in March in a bid to derail the Games which start next Friday.

US confronts Pakistan on links to militants: report PDF Print E-mail

Washington,July 30 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - A top Central Intelligence Agency official traveled to Islamabad and confronted senior officials with evidence of ties between Pakistan's spy agency and militants operating in that country's tribal areas, the New York Times reported in Wednesday editions.

The CIA envoy presented information linking members of Pakistan's Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) with some militant groups responsible for a string of attacks including the suicide bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul this month which killed 58 people, the newspaper said.

Haitian ex-soldiers occupy former army buildings PDF Print E-mail

Port-au-Prince,July 30 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - About 200 ex-soldiers occupied former military buildings in northern Haiti on Tuesday to demand the reinstatement of the disbanded army and 14 years of back pay, the group's leader and witnesses said.

The men took over the buildings in Cap-Haitien, Haiti's second largest city, and in Ouaminthes, a town on the border with the Dominican Republic.

THE HAGUE, July 30 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic arrived in the Netherlands on Wednesday to face trial at a U.N. tribunal on charges of genocide for his actions in the 1992-95 Bosnia war.

A Reuters television correspondent saw the plane carrying Karadzic land at Rotterdam airport.

Kuwait eyes higher minimum wage after workers strike PDF Print E-mail

REUTERS, KUWAIT- Inflation-hit Kuwait is considering raising the minimum wage to 40 dinars ($151) after Bangladesh workers staged a strike demanding better pay, state news agency KUNA reported.

The Kuwaiti government reached an agreement with the workers on Monday to end a three-day strike over pay and working conditions against a backdrop of soaring inflation, which exceeded 11 percent in April and May.

Over 25 militants, 5 soldiers killed in Pakistan PDF Print E-mail

REUTERS, MINGORA, Pakistan- More than 25 Taliban militants and five Pakistani soldiers have been killed in a fierce clash in the troubled Swat valley in the northwest, a military spokesman said on Wednesday.

The fighting took place overnight in a village near Matta, a known stronghold of militants in the region.

Ten unexploded bombs found in western Indian city PDF Print E-mail

REUTERS, AHMEDABAD, India- Police found ten unexploded bombs in the western Indian city of Surat, one of the world's biggest diamond-polishing centers, on Tuesday, three days after a series of bombs in the same state killed 45 people.

"We have defused seven bombs and (are) working on three more," senior police official H.P. Singh told Reuters.

6 quizzed over Antigua honeymoon murder PDF Print E-mail

Police in Antigua are questioning six suspects over the murder of a British doctor shot dead on her honeymoon, according to local media reports today, reports Reuters.

Catherine Mullany, 31, was killed in her hotel room at a luxury resort on the Caribbean island. Her husband Benjamin Mullany, also 31, was shot in the neck and is in critical condition.

REUTERS, DUBAI- A key al Qaeda figure has said Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah should be killed for calling for an interfaith dialogue that amounted to joining a Western crusade against Islam.

"Hurrying to kill this wanton tyrant (King Abdullah) who has announced himself to be a leader of atheism would be among the most pious acts," Abu Yahya al-Libi said in a video posted on Monday on Islamist websites often used by al Qaeda supporters.

REUTERS, MELBOURNE- Starbucks Corp plans to shut 61 of its 85 coffee shops in Australia and focus its remaining operations on three major cities, the US company said on Tuesday, as part of a major belt-tightening program.

The Seattle-based chain, facing a US consumer slowdown, higher food costs and more competition, had said this month it would close 600 unprofitable outlets in the United States but would continue its expansion in international markets.

Reuters, Canberra- Almost seven years after Australia sent commandos onto a freighter at sea to block illegal immigrants, the government on Tuesday said it would abandon a controversial policy of jailing asylum seekers.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans, whose centre-left Labor government last year swept aside conservative rivals in power for a decade, said detention in often-remote immigration jails would now be used only as a last resort.

REUTERS, WASHINGTON- Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani sought on Monday to reassure U.S. President George W. Bush of his government's commitment to securing its border with Afghanistan, where Taliban and al Qaeda militants pose a growing threat.

Gilani, on his first official visit to the United States, held talks with Bush hours after a suspected U.S. missile strike killed six people, possibly including an al Qaeda chemical and biological weapons expert, in a Pakistani tribal region.

REUTERS, BAGHDAD- Tens of thousands of Iraqi Shi'ites converged on a revered shrine in Baghdad for the climax of a major pilgrimage on Tuesday, a day after three female suicide bombers killed 35 people among crowds of pilgrims.

Iraqi authorities imposed a vehicle curfew in the city.

Officials had predicted 1 million people would attend the commemoration of the death of one of Shi'ite Islam's 12 imams.

Reuters, Kuala Lampur- Malaysian opposition figure Anwar Ibrahim plans to run for parliament, his party said on Tuesday, as he seeks to sustain an opposition drive to unseat the government that appears to lose momentum.

Anwar, who is facing a criminal investigation over sodomy allegations, would contest in either the Kulim Bandar Baharu seat in northern Kedah state or Bandar Tun Razak near the Malaysian capital, said People's Justice Party spokesman Tian Chua.

Reuters, United Nations- The UN Security Council was split on Monday over an effort by Libya and South Africa to have the council prevent the International Criminal Court from indicting Sudan's president for genocide.

The council discussed the Libyan and South African proposals after the ICC's chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, asked the court's judges to issue an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir's over war crimes in Darfur.

Reuters, Guantanamo Bay US Naval Base, Cuba- Prosecutors in the trial of Osama bin Laden's driver unveiled a graphic video on Monday of the September 11 attacks and other al Qaeda operations that is likely to play a repeated role in pending war crimes cases.

The video is entitled "The Al Qaeda Plan," an echo of "The Nazi Plan" made by Oscar-winning director George Stevens as evidence in the Nuremberg war crimes trials of German leaders after World War II.

Reuters, Mingora, Pakistan- Pro-Taliban militants killed three army intelligence officers in an ambush in the northwestern Swat valley, officials said on Tuesday, delivering a serious blow to a peace accord signed in May to end violence.

The peace agreement with militants led by radical cleric Fazlullah brought a brief lull after months of violence in the valley, but militants have stepped up activity in recent weeks, accusing the government of failing to honour the accord.

UN admits 'significant' Myanmar exchange rate loss PDF Print E-mail

Reuters, United Nations- The top UN humanitarian affairs official said on Monday the world body had suffered "significant" losses while delivering cyclone aid to Myanmar due to a distorted official exchange rate.

Earlier this month, the United Nations issued an appeal for more than $300 million in extra aid to cope with the effects of Cyclone Nargis that struck the Irrawaddy Delta region in early May, leaving around 140,000 people dead or missing.

Reuters, Islamabad- Pakistanis doubt whether their new civilian leaders are capable of asserting control over a powerful military spy agency after what was widely seen as a botched attempt at the weekend.

The timing could not have been more embarrassing for Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, in the United States for a meeting with President George W. Bush on Monday that focused on Pakistan's role in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.
