Quality education to ensure progress
Tuesday, 01 April 2008

The Education Adviser, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahaman, has rightly said that there was no alternative to quality education for prosperity. He was speaking at the prize giving ceremony of annual sports and cultural competition of the Ishpahani School and College in the city on Saturday. The Adviser said that the government was working with effective reforms and necessary supports to improve the overall state of education. He also wisely said massive commercialization of education at all levels was a big obstacle in ensuring quality education. Some changes, additions and modifications in the 1973 Ordinance to ensure accountability among the teachers and students have become urgently necessary. The prevailing trend of student politics should be stopped without delay for maintaining smooth pace of education. The public universities are the victims of deadly student politics. There is no country in the world where the students indulge in such malpractice in the name of politics as in the public universities of Bangladesh. We urge the government to take all necessary steps to restore proper academic atmosphere at the public universities. True it is that needs of all people are not the same. Some people want to attain some education to write and read letters and keep personal accounts. Others need it to read books of their choice. But most people consider education as a way of income. This point has never been given proper importance in our education system. This is the main reason of a huge number of drops out in our schools and colleges. The government’s bid to ensure compulsory education for all cannot be successful unless and until education is need-based. Vocational training including training on information technology should be included in our curriculum. This will highly reduce the unemployment rate in the country. People coming out of schools and colleges would get jobs soon. Opportunities of employment abroad will also increase. The country will not be burdened with thousands of jobless degree holders. Financial success of educated people will encourage all others to acquire education. It will then ensure the economic progress of the nation.
