Badda Jagarani upset B league champions Abahani 1-0 in the inaugural match of the Protiti Pharma Victory Day Club Cup Football Tournament at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.

Milon scored the all-important goal in the 47th minute. While Abahani’s national stars clearly looked out of sorts their opponents reaped the benefits of playing regular football in the senior division league.

Even though Badda were cornered by their superior counterparts on a number of occasions, but time and again they waited for the chance to hit on the break. Abahani lacked firepower in the striking zone with Tipu and Emily repeatedly looking goal-shy. Except for skipper Joy none of the Abahani midfielders were able to dominate the crucial area of the pitch.

The defence welcomed back former national defender Shujon but there was no understanding between reliable mates Nazrul and Shiraji and that eventually cost the match for the Sky Blues.

Abahani started aggressively but all their efforts ended either wide or off the goalpost. In fact, Badda was first to sent a chill through the Abahani spine on the 19th minute when Nasir broke through the right flank and sent a minus to Rana whose angular shot was punched by custodian Biplob to safety.

The next few minutes belonged to Abahani but they failed to break the deadlock. In the 29th minute Badda goalie Nehal fisted Emily’s header off a Shiraji cross. Nehal was at his brilliant best in the 31st minute as he punched an in-swinging Robin cross to thwart Tipu’s valiant headed effort.

In the 42nd minute Tipu headed wide off a Wali Faisal cross and the very next minute Abahani’s frustration touched the sky as Tipu’s header off a Emily cross struck the crosspiece.

Two minutes after the break Badda broke the chilly evening’s duck. Nazrul and Shiraji’s hesitation to clear a harmless ball allowed midfielder Milon to cooly beat Biplob on the far post.

Abahani tried to add more attacking flair by bringing on Abul and Parvel in the midfield but dogged defence work by Badda presented them a famous victory. Earlier, Spandan Shilpi Ghosti artistes performed in the colorful opening ceremony.

They presented dance, folklore display, motor-cycle stunts, stick walking and little kids displayed the jerseys of the eight participant clubs.

Special assistant of the Chief Adviser for sports ministry Mahbub Jamil inaugurated the tourney as the chief guest.
