Khaleda Invited to Ctg Mayoral Oath Ceremony
Sunday, 18 July 2010

Main opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been invited to the oath swearing programme of the newly elected Chittagong mayor M Manzur Alam, the Awami League leader general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said on Saturday.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will administer the oath of BNP-backed mayor-elect at her office at 10am on Sunday.

Ashraf said that the oath programme of 41 councillors and 14 female councillors of reserved seats will be held at the LGED office at Agargaon at 12pm the same day.

"The opposition chief has been invited. She will attend, I hope," said Ashraful.

Manzur defeated AL-backed ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in the June 17 election.

BNP has claimed that at least six well-wishers of Manzur including his election agent and Chittagong Metropolitan BNP's president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury have not been invited to attend the programme.

A BNP leader, asking anonymity, told that Manzur gave a list of his family members and several others outside of his family - but a number of those linked to the BNP were not invited

Ashraful, however, told reporters that he didn't know anything about the matter.

Some 1000 guests have been invited to the programme.
