10 Islamist Parties Support Manzur

Ten Islamist political parties including Jamaat-e-Islami have extended their support to M Manzur Alam, the opposition BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Chittagong City Corporation polls.

The declaration came form a press briefing attended by the 10 parties at the Chittagong Press Club auditorium on Monday.

Other than the BNP and Jamaat, the other eight parties are Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, Nezam-e-Islami Party, Muslim League, National People's Party, Islami Oikya Jote, Khelafat Majlish and Jatiya Party (Matin).

The briefing also declared to withdraw candidacy of Sammilita Nagarik Parishad (jointly formed by nine parties) candidate Afsar Uddin Chowdhury in support of Manzur. Afsar Uddin was the Jamaat runner.

Chittagong metropolitan BNP president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "Chittagong City has been destroyed in a planned way. The electorates of the city are frustrated over the lack of progress in the past 17 years and they want change in the mayor's office."

Top-ranking metropolitan unit leaders of the parties were present at the briefing.
