Education Day was observed across the country Wednesday with the demand for a pro-people education system.

Dhaka mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka inaugurated Shikkha Odhikar Chattar (Right to Education Crossing) in front of the High Court in the Dhaka University area where a number of students including Mostafa, Waziullah and Babul were shot dead while protesting the 1962 Education Commission report during the Ayub Khan regime.
 
"The dreams of Zafar, Jainal and Mostafa are still to be translated into a reality," the DCC mayor said, paying tributes to those who sacrificed their lives.
 
Workers Party leaders Rashed Khan Menon, Haider Akbar Khan Rano, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Shirin Akter, Awami League leader Mukul Bose, former DUCSU general secretary Dr Mushtaq Husein, labour leader Abul Hossain were present on the occasion.
 
Different student organisations started the day's programmes by placing wreaths at the Shikkha Odhikar Chattar.
 
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Bangladesh Students 'Union (BSU), Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF), Bangladesh Chhatra Maitri (BCM) and Bangladesh Chhatra Fedaration (BCF) placed wreaths at around 11am.
