Ahsan Habibul Alam

A gas field containing huge reserve of natural gas is lying abandoned at Patiya sub-division under Chittagong, informed sources said.

Experts believe the field has a possible reserve of some crore cfts of the resource.

Discovered back in 1951, this gas field has been left uncared for and abandoned for last 57 years thus losing huge natural gas worth hundreds of crores in BDT.

The field is located at the hill area named Budbudi Chara at village Haidgaon bordering Patiya-Rangunia four km east of the upazila.

The then Pakistan government, according to sources, appointed Burma Oil Company(BOC) to explore mineral resources at Budbudi Chara area.

After long exploration the company discovered the field with huge reserve of gas.

But the company for mysterious reasons sealed the mouth of gas mine and left the project declaring it abandoned.
The government filed a case against BOC and later appointed a Russian mineral exploration organization to test the possibility of oil and gas within 300 acres of the surrounding area.

The organization submitted a report stating huge reserve of gas and oil there.

Besides another team of Bangladesh army and two other foreign teams conducted survey in the area with same conclusion of existence of huge amount of minerals.

Locals said, apart from Budbudi Chara, sometimes, coils of smoke are emitted from neighboring Srimai Canal and its surroundings.

Engineer Khan Asraf Ali of Bakrabad Gas Systems Limited told this correspondent that the project is beyond their jurisdiction but he could contact higher authority in this regard..
