Stocks Mixed After Economic Data

AP, NEW YORK -- Wall Street is narrowly mixed after two economic reports came in much better than the market expected.

The Commerce Department report said new home sales rose 2.4 percent in July, a much better performance than the 1 percent drop economists forecast.

And the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index came in at 56.9, much better than exectations for a reading of 53.
The Dow Jones industrials are down about 5 at the 11,380 level, recovering somewhat from an earlier, larger drop. The other major indexes are modestly higher.
