Political Intelligence Office
Thursday, 21 August 2008

Formation of Political Intelligence Office otherwise called PIO,  a specialized unit of the detective branch  under Dhaka Metropolitan Police has sparked adverse reaction among the political parties who consider it as a deliberate step to control and curb political activities. Officials claim that the primary purpose of the PIO is to timely update the DMP about activities or programmes taken up by political parties, students or factory workers so that the DMP can swiftly act before the situation gets out of hand. The PIO will also be tasked with forecasting probable disruptions of law and order in the capital besides gathering intelligence on political parties and their front organisations. DMP Commissioner on Monday said the PIO has not been established to harass politicians rather it will help maintain law and order in the capital. But nobody is ready to accept this explanation as SB, DB and even some other agencies are there to accomplish the tasks now being reposed in the PIO. So all those who are likely to come under the surveillance of the PIO are opposing it vehemently. The move to monitor the political activities is viewed by different circles as an addition to the Emergency Governments `hidden agenda' to regulate country's politics and make politics difficult for the politicians. The government has come up with the PIO to impose restriction and control on political activities or  harass the political activists at a time when demand is mounting to ensure free functioning of political parties.
