On boosting agriculture sector
Monday, 11 August 2008

Speakers at a discussion recently said that the government is practically not giving priority to the country's agriculture sector in clear negation of its own commitment . One of the speakers, a former adviser to the caretaker government Dhiraj Kumar Nath said if production of food grains is not doubled by 2030, more than one crore people will stand below the poverty line.  64 agriculture extension officers from 64 districts spoke of the problems in improving agricultural production. They said development of the agriculture sector in order to produce more food grains and other produces is being hampered due to mismanagement, irregularities and lack of supervision by the assigned authorities adding seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and other equipment are not reaching the farmers timely and properly. Nothing can be more unfortunate if the government is really found reluctant or unable to honour its commitment to give top priority to agriculture sector and it will be simply suicidal if the development of agriculture and boosting food production are impeded due to any reason. Because, the pivotal role of agriculture in our economy hardly needs to be mentioned. It was evident clearly from the fact that the nation has been able to avert the catastrophic aftermath of the serious food crisis mainly with the help of bumper production of IRRI this year. It is known to all, but in spite of that the agriculture sector is neglected in many ways and the farmers' problems are hardly addressed. The farmers make major contributions to the national economy, but they face terrible crises in getting seeds, fertilizers, diesel, subsidy and agriculture loan. It goes without saying that against the backdrop of global food shortage and skyrocketing prices of food items, all out efforts should be made to boost food production in the country with special emphasis on agriculture
