The home ministry announced Wednesday that no one will be permitted to move about carrying firearms, including licensed guns, to be enforced in election areas a day ahead of the city corporation and municipal polls until the day after.

"In the interest of public security, the government hereby proscribes all movements carrying licenced firearms in the election areas starting 02 August midnight till 05 August midnight," said a home ministry circular issued Wednesday.

The order will, however, exempt members of law enforcing agencies and security personnel working with different government, semi-government and non-government organisations, offices and installation.

Anyone found violating the order will be liable to be punished under the relevant clause of the Arms Act 1878, the circular said.

Four city corporations—Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet and nine municipalities—Naohata, Dupchanchia, Chuadanga, Sreepur, Manikganj, Phulbaria, Shariatpur, Gopalganj and Sitakunda—are scheduled to hold elections on Aug 4.
