The High Court asked the Election Commission on Tuesday to bar candidates who submitted false information and concealed information from the August 4 city and municipality polls.

The bench of justices Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Mashuk Hossain Ahmed asked the EC to launch a rapid investigation and take action against the people found guilty.

The ruling came on a writ petition filed by advocate Shamsul Arefin on July 24.

The court also issued a rule nisi on the EC and EC secretary to explain within two weeks why the candidacy of those who submitted wrong information and hid information would not be cancelled.

The petitioner's lawyer Advocate Tajul Islam told the court that different newspapers and other news media published reports that many candidates had turned in flawed statements to the EC.

The chief election commissioner also expressed disappointment over the situation, Tajul Islam said.

The EC announced the schedule for elections to four city corporations and nine municipalities on June 20.
