Bangladesh will raise issues such as food, energy, trade and climate change at the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo, an adviser said Monday.

Foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury will represent Bangladesh at the SAARC Council of Ministers meeting on July 31 and August 1.

Speaking to reporters prior to his flight to Colombo, Iftekhar explained Bangladesh's role in the SAARC summit.

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed will lead Bangladesh to the two-day main summit starting on August 1.

"At this Summit we will address the crucial issues of the day—food, energy, trade and climate change—among other things," said Iftekhar.

"On each of these issues Bangladesh will have significant points to make. At this point we are in the final phase of our preparatory process," he said.

The adviser welcomed the SAARC decision to set up the headquarters of the South Asian Regional Standards Organisation in Dhaka.

"Our delegation which is already there has also informed me that we may be in the final stage of negotiating convention on Mutual Loyal Assistance on Criminal Matters," said Iftekhar.
