Five students died after a boat capsized on a lake in Mirpur on Wednesday, a police official said.

The incident occurred around noon as nine students of Mirpur MDC Model Institute went boating and their craft capsized just before reaching the shore, Pallabi police chief Abdul Momin told.

Kazi Imdadul Haque Ratul, one of the students who was rescued from the water, differed from the police official, saying the boat capsized as it entered the water.

The boatman rescued two of the students and two managed to swim for shore.

Another student died on the way to the National Heart Foundation after locals rescued him.

Four bodies were later recovered from the water, all of them female, police chief Momin said.

The rescued students were taken to hospitals in Mirpur.
