Awami League will accept the holding of four city corporation and nine municipality polls ahead of national elections, the decision coming at a working committee meeting held Friday, said a senior party leader.

After the meeting, acting party president Zillur Rahman told reporters the decision was taken unanimously.

"We will go to elections for establishing peace and democracy," he said.

On June 20, amid objections from AL and BNP, the Election Commission announced that polls for four city corporations and nine municipalities would be held on Aug 4.

Zillur Rahman said on the day the party would take a decision on participation in the local polls "based on the situation".

Party leaders later said a final decision would be taken in the Awami League presidium and working committee meetings on June 24 (Tuesday) and June 26 (Thursday) respectively.

The working committee meeting which began on Thursday was adjourned to Friday, without reaching a decision.
