Eight microbus passengers were killed and 10 people injured in a road accident on the Cox's Bazar-Chittagong highway Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred around 12:30pm when a passenger microbus and a Greenline Volvo bus collided head-on at Khutakhali.

Seven people died on the spot while the eighth died after being taken to hospital, said Chakoria police officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam

"The Greenline bus bound for Dhaka from Cox's Bazar collided head-on with the oncoming passenger microbus heading for Cox's from Chakoria," said Islam.

"Seven microbus passengers died on the spot. Another microbus passenger died at Dulahazara Christian Memorial Hospital," he added.

Witnesses reported that it was a seven-year-old girl who died at the Christian Memorial Hospital. Her identity could not be known immediately.

They also said one of the seven who died on the spot was the microbus driver, 25-year-old Faridul Alam from Cox's Bazar.

An official of the Greenline Volvo busline, Mizanur Rahman, confirmed that one of their buses had met with an accident at Khutakhali.

None of the bus passengers were injured, he said, though he heard that at least five microbus passengers had died.

Some of the injured passengers had been taken to Chittagong, said Mizanur.
