Khulna mayor gets 7 years for extortion

A court sentenced Khulna mayor Tayebur Rahman to seven years in prison on charges of extortion on Sunday.

Judge Shirin Kabita Akhter, of Jana Nirapotta Bighnokari Oporadh Domon Tribunal for Khulna (tribunal for curbing crimes against public safety), also sentenced city corporation public relation officer Sarder Abu Taher to seven years in jail.

The judge also fined the two Tk 1 lakh each and or another six months behind bars in case of failure to pay the sum.

The court acquitted six other accused in the case.

Tayebur was arrested on Nov 2 last year, while Taher is currently on the run.

Tayeb and Taher were charged with extorting Tk 4.5 lakh from Ali Abdullah Elin of Jaipur village in Rupsha, Khulna, for awarding him a job.

Elin filed the case with Khulna Sadar Police Station on Nov 3 last year.
