Prominent doctor gets 13 yrs for graft

A Dhaka court sentenced Doctors Association of Bangladesh secretary general Dr AZM Zahid Hossain to a total of 13 years in prison Sunday, on charges of accumulating illegal wealth and concealing information on wealth, reports

Judge Tanzina Ismail of the Special Judge's Court-6 fined the secretary general of the BNP-backed organisation Tk 10 lakh or another year in jail in failure to pay the sum and ordered authorities to confiscate his illegally gained wealth.

The special court, set up on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises, also sentenced Zahid's wife Rifat Hossain to three years in jail for abetting her husband. The court fined her Tk 50,000 or another month behind bars if she fails to pay.

Both the accused are currently on the run. Their sentences will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.

Zahid's sentence comprises two terms—0 years for amassing illegal wealth and three years for concealing wealth information from the ACC. The two terms are to be served consecutively.

The Anticorruption Commission filed the case with Ramna Police Station on Oct 3 last year. Zahid was charged with amassing Tk 1.61 crore through illegal means and suppressing wealth information from the ACC of Tk 1.14 crore.

Zahid's lawyer Mojahedul Islam was also charged with assisting him in submitting false information.

Zahid was initially named in a list of graft suspects by the graft watchdog.
