Rajuk could implement Uttara Project
Saturday, 17 May 2008

We now hear of a residential project, now under implementation by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakha that is set to dot the Dhaka horizon. The nine square kilometer project is known as the Uttara third phase. RAJUK has promised serene and peaceful environment, all modern facilities and an infrastructure designed to accommodate future demands. Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur and Mirpur Dhanmondi, Banani, Gulshan, Baridhara and Uttara all have become almost like slums with a degree of commercialization that is sickening. The reality is even if the town planners’ intentions were honest they were unable to resist pressure from powerful quarters. Planning also lacked maturity and necessary expertise. It is because of lace of enough space earmarked for schools for the children of the residents that driving on Dhanmondi roads becomes impossible. Now the authorities are in a fix. They cannot ask the schools to close down. Moreover, as business and commerce expanded demand for space increased. Since the authorities concerned could not show the guts Banani, Gulshan and Dhanmondi have virtually turned into bazaars with Baridhara and Uttara about to follow suit.   City development authorities need to be free from all influences to implement their plans properly. We do not blame RAJUK and the Works Ministry fully for this state of affairs because that is part of our character. We get easily cowed down by the powerful. One thing we must always remember—-independence of an institution is not enough, those who run them must also be men of guts. The same applies to judiciary, ACC, PSC, UGC and other such bodies. Unfortunately, that culture has not developed in this country.   Still, we hope RAJUK will be able to fulfill its promises about this mega Uttara project.
