Duty-free access of our goods to Canada
Thursday, 01 May 2008

No one still knows where a prospective entrepreneur will get a complete list of items he should produce to avail the benefits. One must know first what Canada or other countries extending duty-free access needs as imports from countries like Bangladesh. Sadly, the Export Promotion Bureau or any other related organisation has miserably failed to expose our businessmen to such markets. This should not cost us much. The EPB could organise seminars and symposiums where embassies of countries offering duty-free access could highlight items of their interest. Such an expo will surely help our exporters diversify their goods and get the benefits. GSP facilities granted to Bangladesh by Canada have certainly helped the South Asian country. The export to Canada has been gradually rising with figures standing at 542 million dollars in 2006-07 fiscal year. In 2001-02 Bangladesh export to Canada was only 163 million dollars and the special GSP privilege helped Bangladesh posted over 300 per cent growth during the last five years. sectors. Canada extended duty-free and quota free-access to imports from 48 of the worlds’ least developed countries with the exception of supply-managed agricultural products  as dairy, poultry and eggs, effective from January 1, 2003. The envoy urged the local entrepreneurs to diversify export basket and expand market with a special emphasis on the information technology and pharmaceutical sectors. It is time that the concerned agencies and chamber bodies work together to expand our export base so that we could take full advantage of duty-free access our products have been granted in many countries. Sadly, the export basket of Bangladesh is very small consisting of only a few items. As a LDC, Bangladesh has duty-free access for almost all its export products to all developed countries excluding the USA.
