Fergie rests United stars for Chelsea clash

AFP, LONDON - Sir Alex Ferguson rested a host of stars including Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United's crucial title showdown against Chelsea on Saturday.

With United able to afford a defeat at Stamford Bridge and still stay top of the Premier League table on goal difference, Ferguson opted to give priority to next Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

The Scot left Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Owen Hargreaves on the bench, while there was no place in the 16 for Patrice Evra or Paul Scholes.

Ferguson was able to field Nemanja Vidic after the Serbia defender recovered from a stomach infection. Chelsea left Frank Lampard out of their line-up following the death of his mother Pat on Thursday.

Blues boss Avram Grant replaced Lampard with Michael Essien and also chose John Obi Mikel, who was sent off at Old Trafford in September, instead of Claude Makelele.
