Former UGC chairman Prof Asaduzzaman buried

Former University Grants Commission chairman Prof M Asaduzzaman was laid to rest at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard Saturday.

Prof Asaduzzaman, of Dhaka University's public administration department, died Friday morning of cardiac failure. He was 60.

Earlier Saturday, his body had been taken from BIRDEM hospital to the university campus, where teachers and students paid their last respects.

President Iajuddin Ahmed also came to view the body of his former colleague.

A namaj-e-janaza was held at the central mosque of Dhaka University at 11.00 am.

President Iajuddin, DU vice chancellor SMA Faiz former DU VC Moniruzzaman Miah, former BUET VC Ali Murtoza, health adviser AMM Shawkat Ali, Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, and teachers and students of the public administration and other departments attended the janaza.

A doa-mahfil service will be held on Monday at the DU central mosque after Asr prayers.

Prof Asaduzzaman began his teaching career as a lecturer at Notre Dame College, Dhaka.

After joining Dhaka University, his posts included department chair, dean of the social science faculty, DU Teachers' Association president, DU syndicate member and held many other academic and administrative positions.

Asaduzzaman was also UGC chairman during the previous BNP-led alliance government.

He was born in Shibpur, Narshingdi, on Nov 1, 1948.

M Asaduzzaman left behind his wife, a daughter and two sons.
