A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Tarique Rahman's close friend and business associate Giasuddin Al Mamun to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment, for illegally amassing Tk 111 crore.

Judge Md Sirajul Islam of Special Judge's Court-7, set up at the Jatiya Sangsad premises, further fined Mamun Tk 10 lakh or another year's imprisonment in case of failure to pay.

The court also sentenced Mamun's wife Shaheena Yasmin to three years' rigorous imprisonment for aiding and abetting her husband. The judge also ordered confiscation of all illegally acquired assets.

The Anticorruption Commission filed the case on May 8, 2007, with Dhaka Cantonment Police station. The ACC accused Mamun and his wife of illegally acquiring assets worth Tk 111 crore.

Charge framing in the case was completed on Jan 21 and witness depositions began on Jan 23. Including Thursday's verdict, Mamun has so far been sentenced to a total of 23 years in prison.

He earlier received 10 years for possession of illegal firearms, and three years in jail for failure to submit his wealth report within a deadline given by the ACC. Mamun is in jail, but his wife is on the run.
