Notice seeking Khulna mayorís wealth info okayed

The Anti-Corruption Commi-ssion on Thursday approved separate notices to be served on four corruption suspects, including detained Khulna city mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman, seeking their wealth statements in seven working days.

The ACC also approved a proposal for submission of charge sheet against Jumuna group chairman Nurul Islam Babul, his wife Salma Islam and son Shamim Islam, in a case filed against them, said the commission’s director for administration Hanif Iqbal at a news briefing on the day.

They were charged with owning assets of Tk 5,56,21,600 crore beyond their known sources of income, and concealing information of Tk 4,17,98,412 in their wealth report submitted to the commission, he said.

The charge sheet will be submitted to court under the Penal Code, the Anti-Corruption Act and the Emergency Powers Rules, he said.

The commission lodged a case with the Raman police station against them on August 8, 2007 accusing the family of acquiring wealth of Tk 7.64 crore beyond their known sources and hiding information of Tk 7.43crore in their statement. Babul’s name appeared on the first list of 50 graft suspects, published by the commission on February 22, 2007. He was arrested on February 25, 2007 and the court sent him to jail on a proposal for detention.

He was released on bail in January this year. Meanwhile, the commission okayed notification seeking wealth information from four people – Khulna mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman, former acting managing director of Rural Power Company Limited Zahirul Islam Khan, inspector for Customs and VAT (Siddheswari Circle) Harun-ur-Rashid and Nayek Yousuf Sharif of Razbari police lines.

Former Teletalk managing director M Obaidullah, who submitted his wealth statement on Wednesday, disclosed that among other assets he and his wife owned 121 decimal of land in Kushtia, a five-katha plot in the city’s Uttara area, a RAJUK plot at Purbachal, one katha land and an apartment of 2,800 sft floor space at Dhanmondi, 17 bank accounts having approximately Tk 61 lakh, FDR of Tk 9 lakh, share certificates worth Tk 2.25 lakh, one bank locker and 12 tolas of gold.

Former Chhatra League president Enamul Haq Shamim, who submitted his wealth statement on Tuesday, stated that he and his wife owned 186.67 decimal of land in Shariatpur, some land in Narayanganj, .0429 acre of land in Pabna, a three-katha plot in the city’s Uttara, a 2,584 sft flat at Dhanmondi worth Tk 34.47 lakh, share certificates worth Tk 50,000, one pistol, one gun, seven bank accounts with a balance of Tk 2.34 lakh, DPS worth Tk 3.04 lakh, 2 bank lockers, five tolas of gold, and furniture and electronic appliances worth Tk 4.33 lakh.

The couple – named on the four lists of graft suspects published by the commission on November 4, 2008 – submitted their wealth statement to the commission separately on February 27 and 26.

The Khulna mayor’s name also appeared on the commission’s four lists. He was arrested at his Gulshan residence on October 2, 2007 on charges of extortion.
