South Korea to assist BBS to increase analytical capacity

The South Korean government will give the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics a grant of $1.58 million as technical assistance to increase its analytical capacity.

The assistance will be give under a project, titled ‘Strengthening ICT Training and System of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency and Economic Relations Division signed an agreement to this effect in Dhaka on Thursday.

The KOIKA resident representative in Bangladesh, Kim Chang Sup, and a joint secretary of the ERD signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

The main objectives of the project are to upgrade the statistics production and analytical capacity of the bureau with the introduction of a modern database system and improve statistical processing ability of the bureau officials through advanced training.

The programme will be implemented in two years (2008-2009).

KOICA, through this project, will introduce statistical data management system in the BBS which would ultimately lead to the creation of a modern data warehouse in the near future.

Three new ICT labs would be set up to facilitate training of BBS officials, belonging both to the head office and regional offices, said a press release.
