Sales pick as book fair nears end

With just four more days remaining for the curtains to drop on the month-long annual Amar Ekushey Book fair at the Bangla Academy premises, sales picked up on Monday.

Some 511 collections of poems followed by 441 novels are among the 2239 new arrivals at the stands of the fair in the last 25 days.

A large number of visitors thronged the fair which attracted them with books of various issues, starting from children rhymes to serious political critics. Like all other days, the first couple hours saw mostly the university students standing in queue that crossed the TSC square.

The entry, however, eased after a couple of hours but the flow of visitors continued till the closing at 8:30pm.

Notable collections of poems at the fair are Abul Hossain's Kaler Khatay published by Mowla Brothers, Syed Shamsul Haq's Aamar Samadhikaler Prosadhon published by Ananya Prokashoni, Mahadev Saha's Kalo Megher Opare Purnima pyblished by Anyaprokash, Al Mahmud's Selai Kora Mukh published by Ananya Prokashoni, Rafiq Azad's Poribesh Kabita, Nirmalendu Goon's Ananya Anindita published by Bangla Prokash, Tokan Thakoor's Nurse Ami Ghumaini published by Oitijja, Selected Poems of Shamsur Rahman translated by Kaiser Haq and published by Pathak Somabesh, Sazzad Qadir's Bishwabihin Bijone published by Adorn Publications, Abu Bakar Siddiq's Nodihara Manusher Kotha published Pranto Prokashon, Asad Chowdhury's Nodir Bhangon O Pakhir Thote Khor published by Ittyadi Grantha Prokash, Abu Hasan Shahriar's Tomader Kacher Shohor published by Oitijja, Muhammad Samad's Premer Kabita published by Mowla Brothers .

'Poets publish their collection of poems, but the readers look for the uniqueness in every poet which is the most important aspect of a poetry book,' said poet Mahadev Saha. Meanwhile, fifty-nine new titles hit the fair on Monday.

The new arrivals included 10 novels, four story books, 15 collections of poems, four collections of essays, five collections of rhymes, six books for juveniles, two biographies, a research work, a travelogue and a work on history.

A number of books were launched at the Writers' Corner at the fair. A handicapped Prashanta Roy Razib along with poet Aslam Sani, writer Mitali Hossain and publisher Shawkat Hossain Litu launched Dialara Alam Hafiz's collection of poems Lal-Nil Ek Akash. Parijat Prokashoni has published the book.

Mahubul Alam himself launched his collection of poems Nirbachito Prem Pronoer Kaby on the day. Otithi Prokashini has published the book.

Bangla Academy as part its regular programme held a cultural function in the evening. The academy will also organise such programmes this evening.
