The state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation will import 5.5 lakh tonnes of diesel immediately to meet the demand for irrigation of the farmers, officials said.

BPC has already placed orders with the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and an Egyptian oil company in this regard, the officials added.

Of the total, BPC is scheduled to receive 1.5 lakh tonnes of diesel in the current month while 4 lakh tonnes of diesel in March and April.

Mozammel Huq, director (operation) of BPC, said growing demand for diesel at the beginning of irrigation mostly in the northern parts of country prompted them to buy a huge quantity of diesel.

'We have also a good stock of diesel to dispel fears of diesel crisis in the country.' Presently, over 1.5 lakh tonnes of diesel were in stock while some other consignments from abroad were in the pipeline.

'We are very much alert about diesel during the ongoing irrigation peak season,' the director said. He informed that per day average sale of diesel rose to 7,000 tonnes this month as against per day average sale of 5,000 tonnes recorded one month ago, showing an increase in consumption of 2,000 tonnes diesel per day.
