BDR starts rice OMS in Khulna

The Bangladesh Rifles is going to begin open market sales of rice in Khulna this morning. The food department will start open market sales on January 9.

Food department officials said they had been instructed to carry out open market sales in places in the district headquarters which generally inhabited by low-income group people. The department at a meeting will decide on the open market sales in upazila headquarters and in unions.

Sources in the food department and the Bangladesh Rifles, the BDR personnel will carry out open market sales at 50 spots in the metropolitan area, mainly in the areas home to jute mill workers and labourers and low-income group people.

The Bangladesh Rifles has already withdrawn the rice from the food department for Tk 24 a kilogram to be sold for Tk 25.

The sources said the BDR personnel will be carrying out open market sales at a spot every other day. Eight hundred and fifty kilograms of rice will be sold from a single spot and people would be able to buy three kilograms each at a time.

The food department has 40 OMS dealers in the city corporation area. The department inspectors will carry out an assessment of the open market sales scheduled to begin on January 9 to avoid overlapping the operation by the Bangladesh Rifles.

The OMS dealers will also sell rice for Tk 25 a kilogram, the sources said. The rate in September was Tk 18 a kilogram.

The district food controller, Md Monirul Islam, on Sunday told that the open market sales would continue till late March or early April.
