EXPATS IN LIBYA

Relatives of Bangladeshis trapped in Libya have blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Bhairab demanding government steps to ensure their security.

Traffic on the highway came to a halt as over 1,000 people put blockade on it at Jagannathpur point of the district around 10am on Saturday, causing a three-kilometre tailback, witnesses said.

Traffic on the busy road returned to normal around noon after police removed the blockade, Bhairab police chief Shahjahan Kabir told bdnews24.com.

According to the demonstrators, over 1,000 people of the upazila work in Libya.

"They [expatriates in Libya] are in great danger due to anti-government protests there," said a demonstrator.

The demonstrators alleged that there was no significant government move in sight to evacuate the Bangladeshis to safer places although other countries had already ensured security of their own national working in Libya.

The demonstrators also demanded that their relatives be brought back home, if necessary.

They also threatened to go for tougher protest programmes if steps were not taken immediately to save lives of the Bangladeshis living in Libya.
