Saturday, 25 December 2010

The Christian community in Bangladesh has started celebrating their biggest festival Christmas.

Archbishop Paulinus Costa inaugurated the celebrations in Dhaka on Friday cutting cakes at St. Mary's Cathedral at Kakrail.

Churches around the country have been illuminated and decorated with flowers on the even Christmas.

Speaking on the occasion, Archbishop Costa said, "We'll work together for the welfare of Bangladesh. Let this be our firm pledge."

Father of Dhaka's Christian communication centre Komol Koraia told, "The festivity will in fact start through prayer on Friday night. The significance of the night-prayer lies in realisation of the appearance of Jesus on earth."

The main prayer will be held at Kakrail's St. Mary's Cathedral on Friday night. Archbishop Costa will lead the prayer.

According to the Christian belief, the God needed a female to implement his plan. The female was Virgin Mary who is known as Bibi Mariam to the Muslims.

Christians believe Mary, despite being virgin, gave birth to a child by the God's blessings. The child was named Jesus according to angel Gabriel's saying.

Jesus appeared on earth to preach the Jews who went astray, believe the Christians.
