Anti-Transit Campaigners are Fools: Muhith
Tuesday, 02 November 2010

Finance minister A M A Muhith said Bangladesh is geographically a transit country and those who deny it are fools.

Talking to reporters after attending a meeting with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday, the minister also vowed to give transit facilities to other countries.

The government has taken an initiative to set-up the fees required to utilise the transit and transhipment facilities through Bangladesh, Muhith added.

"While no Value Added Tax (VAT) can be imposed on transit, however, it can be forced in case of transhipment. But as we will have to allow others to use Bangladeshi land for transit, some charges may be imposed for that," the minister said.

India is presently using Bangladeshi waterways as transit.

One of the most influential cabinet members, Muhith said that Bangladesh receives about Tk 5.5 billion for the water transit from India.
