The people of Bangladesh should be united against multinational companies and multilateral lending organisations in order to create a new world order, said eminent economist Muzaffer Ahmad on Tuesday.

The people should make the utmost effort to make the society free of hunger and spread education to all its members, he said at the inaugural ceremony of the association called Unite for Global Economic Justice at Rabindra Sarobar.

The Forum has launched a three-day programme from Tuesday to raise its voice for justice, peace and people's globalisation. People from over 50 organisations gathered at Dhanmondi to express their solidarity with global economic justice.

'Foreign forces enter poor countries under the cover of trade and commerce but they actually grab the entire nations,' he said. To ensure economic freedom, the country must disregard the Western lesson on economics which is driven by the profit motive, he said.

'We must disregard the Western paradigm to ensure our economic emancipation,' the economist added. Deprived people must be given their rights in the development efforts, he asserted. Bangladesh has enough strength to face the pressure of globalisation and external sector, said Farah Kabir, Action Aid's Bangladesh country director.

Bangladesh cannot get rid of poverty without economic justice, she said. Good governance, democracy and the right to talk are needed to establish justice, said women's leader Shirin Akhtar. 'It is a big challenge to establish the right to talk and the right to form unions,' she added. Action Aid's official in Nepal, Navil Subedhi, also expressed his solidarity with Bangladesh's causes. Selina Akhtar, a public representative, and Nasimul Hasan of Incidin also spoke on the occasion.

Topics including human rights, employment, remittance, migration, good governance, local government, climate change and natural resources will be discussed in 28 different sessions.
